LITTERING

Believe it or not, undeniably, land pollution has become the aftermath consequence of excessive littering.
Not only is it an eyesore, it is also an environmental issue, which would surely have a detrimental impact on other aspects, for example, on our local economy, and at the expense of our own 'clean-and-green' reputation that has been carved out painstakingly by our older generations.
Look upon it from a different perspective, what if everyone in the world dispose of garbage indiscriminately everywhere they went, with the common mindset that there will be someone else to help them clear it, the world, our Mother Earth, would definitely be in ruins.

The following are some pictures that depicts the littering situation in Singapore.

'It's just not acceptable anymore to litter, just like it's not acceptable anymore to dump anything into rivers or streams.'

-Tracy Bowen

Creating illegal dumping sites not only harms yourself, your society, your community, your neighbourhood.
It also harms your loved ones around you, putting their lives and many others at risk, when you create illegal dumping sites,
which are maybe deemed as FIRE HAZARDS.

Is it really that hard to dispose your trash into the respective garbage bins provided?
Why do many people find it a chore rather than a responsibility?
To all litterbugs out there, doesn't it bug your conscience, when you know you are destroying your own environment, your own Earth?

Making a mess at the library? Shirking responsibility to tidy up?
Lets hope not, at the very least.

Not only is is illegal, it is indeed very inconsiderate!
Just for personal convenience, at the expense of others.

Blocking the bicycle allocation area, not sparing a thought for other residents.

Spotted anyone out there committing the same offence?
Report or warn them!
Do your part; do what is right, and not close an eye to what is wrong.

Females out there!
Believe it or not, this is absolutely TRUE!
Appeared on the air-conditioning of my apartment!
I'm starting to doubt if residents are lacking of garbage bins .

Currently, to all online public readers,
A question for you guys to ponder over,
Have you all ever wondered who/what are the potential litterbugs/ litter sources?

Research results have also shown that these are the typical sources of litter:

1. Pedestrians
2. Drivers
3. Household Garbage Cans
4. Commercial Dumpsters
5. Demolition Sites
6. Construction sites
7. Motorists
8. Loading docks
9. Debris that falls off from improperly secured trash and recycling collection vehicles and pickup trucks

Statistics of profiles of littering offences from 2002-2006:

1.2% - Teens
19% - below 21 years of age
38.5% - 21-30 years of age
20.6% - 31-40 years of age
14.5% - above 21 years of age

How can we do our part in protecting our environment and ensuring that it is kept litter-free?
Here are some simple suggestions:

1. Pick up litter wherever you go. Even when the litter is not yours, you can play a part by just picking them up and disposing them into the appropriate garbage bins. This way, you are also setting a good example for the younger generations to follow suit.

2. Reuse paper by using two sides of it instead of just one side only.

3. Avoid using plastic bags if possible, go for reusable bags.

4. Dispose your garbage properly into the garbage refuse chute, and not beside/on/around the garbage refuse chute.

LITTERING - The form of visual pollution, where it adversely affects the safety, welfare, wildlife and environmental quality of living beings on our Earth. Everyone has a part to play in ensuring a litter-free living environment. So let's start today!
